The State of Latin American Art

February 26:Mari Carmen Ramirez, the Wortham Curator of Latin American Art and director of the International Center for the Arts of the Americas at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will speak about the state of modern and contemporary Latin American art, highlighting the collections of the MFAH.

Mari Carmen Ramirez, a native of Puerto Rico, holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Chicago. Before coming to Houston, she was curator of Latin American art at the Jack S. Blanton Museum and adjunct lecturer in the department of art and art history, both at the University of Texas at Austin. She has curated many groundbreaking exhibitions of Latin American art and has won awards for curatorial excellence from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and the Peter Norton Family Foundation.

March 4:The Sicardi Gallery and the home of Mary and Roy Cullen will be the venues for this exploration of Latin American art in Houston. The mission of the Sicardi Gallery is to facilitate cultural dialogue between the United States and Latin America using the universal language of art. The gallery is well known for its exhibitions featuring primarily modern and contemporary Latin American art by emerging artists as well as acknowledged masters.

Mary and Roy Cullen’s home contains many distinctive art collections, including superb work by modern Latin American artists from Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, and Uraguay.
