The Romance Film: A Theme and Variations

Four Thursdays, January 8, 15, 22 and 29 at 1 – 2:30 P.M. | Compass Bank, 2001 Kirby at San Felipe, Second Floor

Dennis Huston, professor of English at Rice University, will discuss four romance films: Casablanca, Some Like It Hot, Shakespeare in Love and Tootsie. The iconic film Casablanca portrays a woman loved by two dramatically different men. Some Like It Hot, the great comedy romance, develops two different love stories that take place while the two men travel in disguise as women. Shakespeare in Love, best picture of 1999, follows a romance between Will Shakespeare and Viola who, disguised as a young man, seeks to join the company of players. Tootsie, nominated for 10 Academy Awards, depicts a soap opera actor disguised as a woman who falls in love with a leading lady. All four films, different as they are, depict the movie technique of delaying the union of lovers until the end or bringing them together only to have circumstances tear them apart. The films will be discussed with video excerpts in the above order.
