The De Menils, Houston and the Spirit of Modern Art

Two Sundays, April 18 and 25 at 6 – 7:30 P.M. | Address to be given to subscribers

In 1951 two little-known collectors organized an exhibit of the work of Vincent van Gogh, assembling 21 paintings, watercolors and sketches. It was one of the most exciting events in Houston’s cultural history. John and Dominique de Menil, through the next five decades, played an extraordinary role in twentiethcentury culture. Not just collectors, they were one of our era’s most powerful examples of artistic patronage, notable for its breadth and focus. In these sessions, William Middleton will explore the shared achievements of John and Dominique de Menil. Middleton, a New York–based writer whose work has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, Texas Monthly and The New York Times Magazine, is writing a biography of John and Dominique de Menil, to be published by Alfred A. Knopf.
