J. S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Klavier, a series of Preludes and Fugues covering all the major and minor keys, is a monument of the keyboard repertoire. Its enormous influence extends to the compositions of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy and continues today. The 20th-century master Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his own series of preludes and fugues in direct response to the works of Bach. Pianist Sarah Rothenberg leads this session from the piano, performing examples from both Bach and Shostakovich, discussing the form of the fugue and illuminating its ingenious architectural structures. Ms. Rothenberg is artistic director of Da Camera and a frequent performer at New York’s Lincoln Center as well as in leading European cities. She recently received the Medal of Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government.
