Quiet Light: The Live Oak Meeting House

ONE TUESDAY, 6 – 7:30 P.M., OCTOBER 1 LIVE OAK FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE, 1318 WEST 26TH STREET | (TRAVEL NORTH ON SHEPHERD DRIVE FROM MEMORIAL DRIVE, TURN WEST ON 26TH STREET.)

The Live Oak Friends Meeting House is the only Quaker meeting house in the world that incorporates an art site. World-renowned artist James Turrell, a Quaker by birth, created his Skyspace in the roof of the building. The journey involved in the creation of this unique space will be described by those instrumental in its achievement: Hiram Butler, art historian and co-founder of Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery, represents James Turrell in Houston; Leslie Elkins, A.I.A., principal of Leslie Elkins Architecture, is the architect of the meeting house; and Jane Houser, a member of Live Oak Friends Meeting, was the clerk of the planning committee for the project. After their presentation we will witness, in silence, the magic of the sunset seen through Turrell’s work.
