The Pursuit of Perfection: I Thought It was Just Me Wednesday, January 9, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Saturday, January 12, 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon Thursday, January 17, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Library of the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute, The Harris School 900 Lovett Boulevard (just east of Montrose Boulevard) Brené Brown of the Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston will examine why many women seek to be perfect; why they spend precious time and energy managing perceptions and creating carefully edited versions of themselves to show to the world. She will help us answer the fundamental questions: “What fuels the need to look like we have it all together?”; “Do we really admire perfection in ourselves and others?”; and “What are we really seeking when we seek perfection?” The third session of this course will be a panel moderated by Hinda Simon, MSW, a Houston psychotherapist. Brené Brown holds a doctorate in social work and is a licensed social worker. She teaches graduate courses on women’s issues, shame and empathy, and global justice. She has won numerous teaching awards including the Outstanding Faculty Award of the University of Houston College of Social Work. Professor Brown is the author of I Thought It Was Just Me: Women Reclaiming Power and Courage in a Culture of Shame (Gotham, 2007), which will be available in paperback in January 2008.
