Ever since John James Audubon visited Galveston Island in April 1837, travelers have been enchanted with the abundance and variety of its birds and wildlife. We will tour the bird habitats of the island in order to experience this profusion of nature. Ted L. Eubanks, Galveston author, photographer, and natural historian, will accompany us and speak about the remarkable beauty and variety of birds on the upper Texas coast and the environmental threats to them and their habitats. Following Eubanks’s brief lecture we will visit the 1894 Lasker Home for Children—recently renovated as an event venue—for a box lunch. We will then travel to the east end of the island to view birds in their fragile, environmentally threatened habitats.
Ted L. Eubanks is co-author of Birdlife of Houston, Galveston, and the Upper Texas Coast (Texas A&M Press, 2006); president of Fermata, Inc., a nature tourism, national trails, and wildlife-watching consulting business; and a recipient of the Roger L. Peterson Excellence in Birding Award.
