Cullen Theater, Wortham Center
Graham Greene's haunting novel, The End of the Affair, set
against the backdrop of wartime London, examines the three-way collision
between love of self, love of another and love of God. On February 15,
Terrence Doody, professor of English at Rice University, will discuss
the novel. On February 22, Dennis Huston, professor of English at Rice
University, will explore writer-director Neil Jordan's 1999 adaptation
of Greene's novel to film. And on February 29, composer Jake Heggie,
who burst onto the opera scene with Dead Man Walking, will
discuss the creative process behind his new opera, The End of the
Affair, and describe the transformation of a novel to the stage.
Following Mr. Heggie's lecture and a light supper, the class will have
the unique opportunity to observe an orchestral staging rehearsal of
The End of the Affair, the penultimate practice before the
opera has its world premier on March 4 at the Wortham Center.
