SPRINGTIME IN VIRGINIA: A STUDY TOUR
OF ARCHITECTURAL AND NATURAL MASTERPIECES (FULL) The Houston Seminar will visit Virginia’s Northern Neck, between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers, just south of Washington. We will spend all three nights in the gracious guest facilities at Stratford Hall Plantation, the magnificent seat of the Lee family located on the banks of the Potomac. In addition to visiting Stratford, we will tour nearby eighteenth-century buildings—including Gunston Hall, Sabine Hall, Mt. Airy, Kenmore, Menokin and Christ Church, Lancaster County—several of these are private residences not open to the public and still owned by members of the original families. Camille Wells, an architectural historian at the College of William and Mary, will provide background on these sites and will accompany us on our tours. There will be informal talks by other specialists, an evening on the Rappahannock River on the yacht Miss Ann, dinner at Tides Inn in Irvington, entertaining talks, good company, delicious food—and leisure to enjoy the hundreds of beautiful acres around Stratford. Participants will need to sign a waiver of liability. |
