FIVE WORLD RELIGIONS Five speakers will compare the traditions and beliefs of five world religions. In the first session, the Rev. Pittman McGehee, a diplomate Jungian analyst and director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychology and Spirituality in Houston, will discuss the religious nature of the psyche. Next, Anne Klein, professor of religious studies at Rice University and founding director of Dawn Mountain, a Tibetan temple, community center and research institute in Houston, will speak on Buddhist philosophical and meditative systems. In the third week, David Cook, assistant professor of religious studies at Rice University and a nationally recognized writer and lecturer on Islam, will discuss Islam in its world setting. The fourth class will explore Hindu traditions, led by Joel Brereton, associate professor of Asian studies at the University of Texas in Austin and author of numerous articles on Hinduism. In the fifth week, a lecture entitled “Telling the Jewish Story” will be given by Samuel E. Karff, Rabbi Emeritus, Congregation Beth Israel. In conclusion, Pittman McGehee will explore the topic, “Christianity: Light and Shadow.” |
