Spring 2003 Courses		ART IN PLACE IN 1900: LONDON, PARIS, VIENNA AND MOSCOW FOUR MONDAYS, NOON – 1:30 P.M. APRIL 14, 21, 28 AND MAY 5 THE MENIL COLLECTION, 1515 SUL ROSS The dawn of a new century in 1900 offered a special challenge to artists and thinkers. Four cities functioned as the crossroads of their worlds, places where art and culture intersected and transformed each other. For each metropolis, Elizabeth Richmond-Garza will focus on painting/sculpture, literature, film and theoretical discussions by contemporary critics and artists, from 1880 to 1914. This artistic flourishing will be viewed in the context of urban development, the expansion of empires, Orientalism, the balance of powers in Europe, psychoanalysis, Symbolism and materialism. Elizabeth Richmond-Garza is associate professor of English and comparative literature and director of the graduate program in literature at the University of Texas at Austin.
