LATE BEETHOVEN: CLOSE-UP ON A MASTERWORK (FULL) Pianist Sarah Rothenberg, artistic director of Da Camera, will lead a close-up exploration of Beethovens Piano Sonata No. 30 in E Major, Op. 109. She will aurally dissect at the piano the works startlingly original structure: the extreme contrast in the musical ideas of the works first movement, its immediate connection to the frenzied Prestissimo that follows, and the sublime theme and variations that form the works dramatic culmination. We will focus on hearing the connections from one musical idea to the next and on appreciating Beethovens remarkable genius for the development of musical ideas. Ms. Rothenberg will demonstrate the specific musical qualities, which give this sonata its spiritual power. A frequent performer at New Yorks Lincoln Center as well as in leading European cities, Ms. Rothenberg made her solo debuts in Amsterdams Concertgebouw and Brussels Palais des Beaux-Arts last year. She will perform the piano sonata this spring at the Menil Collection as part of her collaborative program with poet Adam Zagajewski. |
