Outraged and Outrageous? Philip Roth and His Novels

Four Wednesdays, October 4 and 18 and November 1 and 15, 12:30 - 2:00 p.m.

Philip Roth's comic genius, his imaginative courage, and his boldness in exploring uncomfortable truths have made him one of the preeminent writers of our time. When Time magazine named Roth America's Best Novelist in 2001, Paul Gray wrote, “Roth is a serious writer who has never been somber in print; his narrative voice is unique, and so is the way he consistently wrings slapstick comedy out of the tics and obsessions of his characters.”

Terrence Doody, professor of English at Rice University, will discuss four of Philip Roth's novels (in this order): Portnoy's Complaint, the number one best-seller of 1969; The Ghost Writer, the first book of the “most ambitious literary series of our time,” according to Ken Gordon of Salon.com; The Human Stain, recognized with the 2000 PEN/Faulkner award for fiction; and The Plot Against America, which won the coveted British W. H. Smith Award for the best book of the year in 2005 and made Roth the first writer in the 46-year history of the prize to win it twice.
