Timothy
Hester is an associate professor of piano at the Moores School
of Music, University of Houston. This lecture-performance series will
focus on the piano - the universal musical instrument - and how it prescribes
and shapes the ways music is conceived. The piano represents a thread
that binds together many of the great composers of musical language.
Its keyboard is the composer's workplace for creating orchestral, choral,
and operatic music as well as solo and chamber works. In this series,
Professor Hester will explore the piano's role as a solo instrument.
By listening to his survey of great works by composers past and present,
we will discover the power of possibility that the piano offers to the
evolving musical spirit.
