No other architect in modern times has had a more dynamic presence in Houston than Philip Johnson. Beginning with a house for John and Dominique de Menil in 1950 and concluding with the Chapel of St. Basil at the University of St. Thomas in 1995, Philip Johnson designed fourteen buildings in the metropolitan area, including an array of stunning skyscrapers that were pivotal in shaping Houston’s modern image.

Architect William F. Stern will explore the two phases of Johnson’s career in Houston with a lecture focusing on the work of the 1950s and a tour emphasizing the buildings that formed the second phase beginning in 1975. The series will conclude with a panel discussion among individuals who have known and worked with Philip Johnson.

This course is co-sponsored by the art history program of the department of fine and performing arts at the University of St. Thomas.

There will be night classes at the University during our sessions on campus, and parking is limited. Please arrive early to find a parking space.
