THE BROADWAY MUSICAL – THE FIRST CENTURY THREE MONDAYS, 7 – 8:30 P.M., Using film and video clips, taped interview material, and personal anecdote, Alley Theatre resident actor Paul Hope will trace the development of the Broadway musical theater both dramatically and musically from its beginnings in 1896 to the present. The first session will cover the birth of the musical, its roots in vaudeville and burlesque, Ziegfeld, the operetta, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Rodgers and Hart. During the second session we will discuss the Rodgers and Hammerstein era; the rise of the director and choreographer; and the works of Leonard Bernstein, Jule Styne, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, and Jerry Herman. The last session will present Kander and Ebb, Cy Coleman, the concept musical, Harold Prince, Michael Bennett, the reign of Sondheim, and the invasion of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Paul Hope has been a resident actor at the Alley Theatre for 11 seasons and is a veteran of 40 Theatre Under the Stars productions. He has toured nationally with “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” and “Mame.” Most recently he has begun mounting an annual presentation of musicals -in- concert stagings to benefit the Center for Aids: Hope and Remembrance Project. |
