The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression

Andrew Solomon, novelist and contributor to the New Yorker and the New York Times, will discuss his highly acclaimed new book, The Noonday Demon. It is an inquiry into depression with reference to his own debilitating illness, that of fellow sufferers, and the history, chemistry, and treatment of depression, which he describes as "emotional pain that forces itself on us against our will, and then travels free of the externals." Solomon notes the inadequacy of treatment for adolescents and elders, whose depressions are complicated by organic changes. The author dispels the notion that depression is primarily a Western, middle-class illness, exploring its roots and treatments in other cultures; and he concludes that depression has enabled him and others to grow in unexpected ways: to be more tolerant, more confident, and more loving.
