Three Tuesdays, 6 - 7:30 p.m., October 16, 23, and 30 How did Houston develop into the art center it is today? Where is the city's art scene headed? Three distinguished gallery owners - Meredith Long, Betty Moody, and Doug Lawing - will meet us at their galleries and offer their perspectives, from the 1950s until today. Meredith Long Galleries, which deals exclusively in nineteenth- and twentieth-century and contemporary American art, has been in business since 1957 and is the oldest active, continuously operating gallery in Houston. Meredith. Long will speak of the history of the Houston art scene from his unique perspective. Moody Gallery opened in 1975 and specializes in contemporary American artists with emphasis on artists living and working in Texas. Betty Moody will discuss the range of art that she exhibits: sculptures, paintings, water colors, "installation" work, art from a variety of unusual materials, and computer-generated art. Lawing Gallery, which opened in 1995, focuses on work by nationally and internationally emerging artists and also shows the work of more established artists. Doug Lawing will discuss the wide range of work that he exhibits. His gallery is located in the Foley Building (c. 1880) in the Market Square Historic District. |
